Class Descriptions

September 10, 2009

Chemistry- covers matter and its reactions.  Subjects cover: Matter and Change, Scientific Measurement, Atomic Structure, Periodic Table, Chemical Names and Formulas, Chemical Quantities, Chemical Reactions, States of Matter, Chemical Bonds, Acids and Bases, and Thermochemistry.  Algebra 2 is recommended before taking chemistry because there is a lot of math.  Calculators are needed for most chapters.  On lab days please don't wear clothes that you don't want to possible get holes or stains on.

Human Anatomy- covers the structures and functions of the human body.  Chapters include: The Human Body an Orientation, Basic Chemistry, Cells and Tissues, Blood, The Cardiovascular System, Lymphatic System and Body Defenses, The Respiratory System, The Digestive System and Body Metabolism, The Urinary System, and The Reproductive System.  The class involves a lot a vocabulary lists to know.  The structures (ex. bones) are tested on pictures.  The main lab is dissecting the fetal pig fourth quarter.

Biology- covers understanding the living world.  Subjects cover: The Science of Biology, Chemistry of Life, The Biosphere, Ecosystems and Communities, Populations, Cell Structure and Function, Photosynthesis, Cellular Respiration, Cell Growth and Division, Genetics, Evolution, Classification, Protists, Fungi, Sponges, Worms and Mollusks, Arthropods and Echinoderms, Invertebrates, Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, and Mammals.  Main labs include dissecting second semester (worm, clam, starfish, crayfish, fish, and frog).  Biology has a lot of vocabulary.

Physical Science- covers introduction to chemistry and physics.  Chemistry studies matter and its reactions.  Physics studies the interaction between matter and energy.  Subjects cover: Properties of Matter, States of Matter, Atomic Structure, The Periodic Table, Chemical Bonds, Chemical Reactions, Acids and Bases, Motion, Forces and Motion, Forces in Fluids, Work, Power, Machines, Energy, Heat, and Electricity.  There are main labs in physical science throughout the year.  The class does involve a lot of Alegra.  Second semester involves a lot of math.

Environmental Science- covers all interactions in the environment.  Subjects cover: Planet Earth, Methods of Science, Biosphere, Matter and Energy in the Ecosystem, Interactions in the Ecosystem, All Biomes (ex. deserts, grasslands), Human Population, Nuclear Energy, Organic Fuels, Alternative Energy Sources, Pollution, Water, Air and Noise Pollution, and Habitat Destruction.  If weather works out most labs are outside.  Involves a lot of small simple labs.  We have a field trip to Smith Lake to visit Nature Center and fish.  We need fishing licenses to fish.
