Suspension from School

Students may be assigned an in-school suspension by the principal for up to 10 days. Out-of-school-suspensions may be assigned by the principal for an additional 10 days when removal of student from the building is in the best interest of the other students and school personnel. The following reasons may be cause for suspension:

  1. Willful or gross misconduct or insubordination to school personnel in or away from the school setting.
  2. Writing, gesturing, or using profanity or obscene language in or around school grounds or at school-sponsored activities.
  3. Use or possession of tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, or controlled substances (drugs).
  4. Leaving the school building or grounds without permission from school personnel.
  5. Vandalism to school property or the personal property of others.
  6. Any act which endangers the safety of faculty, staff, or students.
  7. Unexcused absence, truancy, or habitual tardiness.
  8. Theft of school or student property.
  9. Driving a motor vehicle during the day without permission.
  10. Any irresponsible acts as determined by the principal.


In all cases, students will be guaranteed due process before a suspension is assigned. The principal will conduct an informal investigation of the charges against the student. Verbal and written notice of the charges, the basis in fact for the charges, and the opportunity for the student to respond will be given.

A student who is on suspension will not be permitted on school grounds until the day following completion of the suspension. The student may also be required to make up the time missed before or after school. A student may appeal suspension from school or ineligibility from extracurricular activities by the following procedures in the order listed:

  1. Conference with the principal
  2. Conference with the superintendent
  3. Appeal to the Board of Education
